3 Things to Avoid If You Have Oily Skin

Oily skin can be a nuisance - like those too-tight heels - when not treated properly. It is characterized by an increase in the amount of lipids on the skin's surface - sourced from an overactive sebaceous gland. Result: a thick and shiny skin surface with enlarged pores. This then makes your skin more susceptible to blackheads and other types of blemishes. It's something we can all do without. However, if common skincare mistakes are also made, the oily skin condition can become even worse.

Here are three simple pitfalls to avoid in order to help improve your oily skin.

#1 Don’t Wash Your Face Too Much

Washing your face helps you feel refreshed. However, more is not always better. If you wash your face too much, you are stripping your skin of its natural oils, which leave your glands deprived. This leads to increased oil production that your body overcompensates for the lack of oil - enlarging and clogging pores.

#2 Keep Your Hands Away From Your Face

The skin on your entire body is always producing oil - including your hands. Thus, when you touch your face, you are transferring oil from your hands to your face. So be careful! Your face is extra sensitive and can easily absorb the oil from your hands.

#3 Eat Smart

Avoid excess alcohol and spicy foods. These foods can dilate facial blood vessels and lead to excessive sweating. Result: oilier skin. Thus, limit alcohol and extra spicy foods to once a week. Also, stay away from foods cooked in heavy oils and grease - as they can cause inflammation and wreck havoc on your skin.
