Sometimes what we love can also be what hurts us the most. Whether it’s jogging under the summer sun, playing in the water with the sun’s rays beaming down, or simply soaking in the sun. Bottom line, we all love the sun! However, too much sun will not only give you gnarly sunburns, but can also lead to red scaly spots, dry skin, wrinkles, and worst of all, skin cancer.
Yet, you can’t completely avoid the sun. We know this. And why would you want to avoid the glorious sun? The sun is one of life’s greatest pleasures. But what’s the solution? Follow our 5 simple tips on how to best protect your skin from sun damage.
1. Smart Timing
The sun’s rays are most intense between 10 AM and 4 PM. If possible, avoid being outside in the sun during these hours. However, if you do happen to find yourself exposed to the sun during these hours, cover up and wear sunscreen!
2. Lather Up
Use sunscreen with at least an SPF of 30. Spread a generous amount on your skin; using a small amount can reduce the effectiveness of the sunscreen by up to 50%.
And if you’ll be splashing in the water, use waterproof sunscreen.
3. Sunscreen Application Tricks
For best results, take note of the following when applying sunscreen:
- Apply sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes before partnering with the sun for the day; as it takes time for your skin to absorb the sunscreen lotion.
- If you sweat or get wet, apply sunscreen more often. Every two hours is a good time table to keep.
- If you have lighter skin, apply sunscreen several hours before sun exposure. Then before you do step out, apply a second layer.
4. Sneaky Reflected Light
Even underneath a tree or umbrella, ultraviolet light can sneak its way through. Ultraviolet light can reflect from the sand, snow, asphalt, and many other surfaces. It can also penetrate water. So it’s extremely important to apply sunscreen all over before going outside. Cover every area like you would frost a cake!
5. Don’t Miss a Spot
We often apply lotion on the most obvious places, but miss those small hidden spots that often burn the most. We have created a list of areas on your body that you should always remember to apply sunscreen to:
- Top and backs of the ears
- “V” area of chest
